Overview
Mount Meru is Tanzania’s quiet giant a volcanic peak that rises above the savannah with dramatic ridgelines and crater walls. At 4,566 meters, it’s the country’s second-highest mountain and one of East Africa’s most underrated treks. You’ll start in lush rainforest, where giraffes and buffalo roam freely, and climb through heath and alpine zones to reach Socialist Peak. Along the way, you’ll pass waterfalls, ancient fig trees, and volcanic ridges with sweeping views of Kilimanjaro.

Description:
You’ll start with a drive from Arusha to Momella Gate. After registration and briefing, you’ll begin your trek through lush forest trails. The path is alive with wildlife like giraffes, buffaloes, monkeys, and birds. You’ll walk gently uphill, passing waterfalls and fig trees, until you reach Miriakamba Hut. It’s a peaceful place to rest, surrounded by forest sounds and mountain air.

Description:
After breakfast, you’ll ascend through forest and heath zones. The trail opens up, and you’ll stop at Mgongo wa Tembo viewpoint for dramatic views of the crater rim. You’ll arrive at Saddle Hut for lunch and rest. In the afternoon, take an optional hike to Little Meru (3,820 m) a short climb with big views. You’ll return to Saddle Hut for dinner and prepare for summit night.

Description:
Summit day begins at midnight. You’ll climb past Rhino Point and Cobra Point, reaching Socialist Peak at sunrise. The views are unforgettable, Kilimanjaro to the east, the crater below, and the plains stretching far beyond. After celebrating at the summit, you’ll descend to Saddle Hut for brunch, then continue to Miriakamba Hut for dinner and overnight.

Description:
Your final descent is gentle and quiet. You’ll walk through forest trails, spotting birds and wildlife as you return to Momella Gate. After check-out, you’ll be driven back to the hotel.
